The amazing story behind this salutation goes back to the year 1966, when Shaykh Sulayman al-Qalyubi, may Allah have mercy upon him, was afflicted with a brain tumour.
He said:
By the will of Allah, I was afflicted with a terrible neurological illness, so I went to the doctors, and they said to me: “You only have a 1% chance of survival!” Then, I left and performed wudu and went to my place of seclusion. I persisted in my invoking salutation upon the Prophet, saying: “Allāhumma ṣalli wa sallim wa bārik alā Sayyidinā Muḥammadin ṭibb il‐qulūbı wa dawā’iha wa āfiyat il‐abdāni wa shifā’iha wa nūr ul‐abṣāri wa diyā’iha.” Before the time of Fajar, I felt the coolness of the Prophet's blessed hand upon my head, and he said to me, “My son, say: wa rūḥ ul‐arwāhi wa sirri baqā’ihā.” After that, I went to the doctors, and they were amazed at my healing. Among the doctors was a non‐Muslim man; when I related my story to him, he said: “I testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
O Allah, send prayer, peace and blessing upon our Master Muḥammad, the physician of the hearts and the cure, the wellbeing of the bodies and their cure, the light of the eyes and their sight, the spirit of all spirits and the secret of their endurance.
